EOTO 1 Presentation Reflection

The Boston News-Letter was considered the second newspaper to ever be printed in the United States and the first newspaper to ever be printed more than once. Its first issue was published on April 24, 1704. John Campbell was the editor of the paper, and Bartholomew Green was the papers printer. The Boston News-Letter was the first mass media medium to spread foreign or domestic information on politics, wars, deaths, sermons, ship arrivals, accidents, and fires. It allowed the community to respond back to the government or other areas of interest.
The News-Letter was noted for its pro-British sympathies, and the words “published by authority” appeared on its front page. It ceased publication in 1776 when the British withdrew from Boston, taking Margaret Draper, an ardent Loyalist and publisher/printer of the newspaper, with them.

    The New York Journal was
an example of yellow journalism,  where the newspapers used competitive strategies to attract readers, such as illustrations, active journalism, and bold headlinesThe Journal consumed many false/exaggerated stories about the tensions between the United States and Spain which caused public sentiment against Spain and was influential in the War. The New York Journal-American was a daily newspaper published in New York City from 1937 1966. The Journal-American was the product of a merger between two New York newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst: The New York American (originally the New York Journal, renamed in 1901), was a morning paper, and the New York Evening Journal, an afternoon paper. Both were published by Hearst from 1895 to 1937. The American and Evening Journal newspapers merged in 1937.

Both of these newspapers were critical in shaping journalism today and the ways in which we strategize what we publish to attract readers. It's so interesting to se how journalism develops through time and how we interpret it later.
